At least 24 people were killed when the truck they were travelling in overturned on a slippery road after overnight rains in the western Indian state of Gujarat, police said.

The vehicle was travelling on the Sanand-Viramgam highway in the state's Ahmedabad district.

Most of the victims were labourers who were travelling on the truck loaded with salt, police said.

Six of the 15 injured people have been admitted to two hospitals in the city.

Road accidents kill hundreds of Indians every year. Most are blamed on reckless driving, old vehicles and bad roads.
