An 18-year-old man has appeared in court charged with the murder of a 12-year-old girl in Dublin at the weekend.

Jonathan Byrne, of Lohunda Downs in Clonsilla, Dublin, is accused of murdering Michaela Davis, whose body was found on a bank of the Royal Canal.

He was remanded in custody at Dublin District Court.

A post mortem examination showed that the schoolgirl had been attacked, sexually abused and strangled. A passer-by found her body on Saturday.

It is understood the girl left her home just after midnight on Saturday morning.

Her parents reported her missing two hours later.
