Georgia: Land grab or modernisation in remote Svaneti?

Help

Locals in a remote mountain region of Georgia say their land is being seized by the government to allow it to build a multi-million dollar tourist resort.

The region of Svaneti has for centuries remained unspoilt because it is so isolated.

Some of its residents now say the government is ignoring traditional property rights to make way for the massive project which is part of a showcase of modernisation plans put forward by President Mikheil Saakashvili.

Tom Esslemont reports.
