Two men have stolen a diamond ring worth 500,000 euros ($700,000) from French luxury jeweller Cartier in Rome, police say.

The pair asked to see the most expensive ring available in the shop on Rome's exclusive Via Condotti.

They then walked off with the ring and, according to witness statements, jumped into a waiting car with a driver.

Police in Rome said they are looking for two foreigners in their 40s.

The two men were described as well-dressed with jacket and tie and apparently unarmed, police in Rome added.
