Woman dies, girl critically ill after Mullingar crash

A woman has died and a seven-year-old girl is in a critical condition following a car crash near Mullingar in the Republic of Ireland.

Two vehicles were involved in the collision which happened on the Delvin Road at Ballagh at about 18:00 BST.

The woman, aged in her 40s, was driving one of the cars and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her passengers, the seven year old and a 14 year old, were taken to hospital. The teenager sustained minor injuries.

A man in his 40s, who was the sole occupant of the other car, was also treated in hospital for injuries that are not believed to be life threatening.

Garda Forensic Collision Investigators are examining the scene of the crash and have appealed for witnesses to contact them.
