Spain regions: Catalonia votes in key elections

Help

Voting has begun in the Spanish region of Catalonia in a snap election dominated by the issue of independence.

Catalan nationalist parties have been campaigning for a referendum on whether the region should break-away from Spain.

A referendum on independence for Catalonia, which has Barcelona as its capital and already enjoys significant autonomy, would be illegal under the current constitution.

Tom Burridge reports from Barcelona.
