Man is shot dead in County Meath
A man has been shot dead near Gormanston in County Meath.
The victim, who was known to Irish police for his involvement in dissident republican activities, was shot in the car park of a pub shortly before 14:30 GMT.
He has been named locally as Peter Butterly from Dunleer in County Louth.
Five men have been arrested. The area has been sealed off for forensic examination.
RTE reports that the man who was killed was arrested and charged with the transportation of bomb components for assembly three years ago.
He was later acquitted at the Special Criminal Court because a search warrant was declared unconstitutional.
A post mortem examination is due to take place on Thursday.
