Return to Auschwitz: Israel keeps Holocaust memories alive

24 June 2013 Last updated at 14:31 BST

The Holocaust, in which 6 million Jews died, remains for most Israelis one of history's defining events.

Thousands of Israelis visit the Nazi death camp at Auschwitz in Poland every year.

As the number of people who survived the Holocaust dwindles, official delegations of army officers are sent to Auschwitz to learn the lessons of the Holocaust.

The government believes their knowledge will deepen their commitment to defending the country.

Kevin Connolly reports.
