Canal du Midi diseased plane trees to be cut down

25 July 2013 Last updated at 10:59 BST

42,000 plane trees which run along the historic Canal du Midi will have to be chopped down due to the spread of an infectious, incurable fungus.

The site has UNESCO status and links the Atlantic ocean to the Mediterranean Sea.

Now a campaign has been launched to fund replanting so that the landmark can eventually be returned to its former glory.

Christian Fraser reports from Toulouse.
