Gary Walsh charged with murder of Cathal Sweeney

A 31-year-old man has been charged with the murder of Cathal Sweeney in Dublin on Saturday.

Gary Walsh, with an address at Ravensdale in Kimmage in Dublin, was remanded in custody when he appeared at Dublin District Court.

Mr Sweeney, 62, died after he was attacked in a flat at Ashdale Gardens where he had been socialising and watching the Ireland-Wales rugby match.

A police officer told the court Mr Walsh said "no reply" when charged.

Mr Sweeney was hit and suffered head injuries after a fall.

He was treated at the scene by paramedics, but died a short time later in St James's Hospital.

Mr Sweeney was a former captain of St Mary's rugby club in Templeogue in Dublin.

His son, David, is a former captain of the Dublin senior hurling team.
