Pope Francis to install 19 new cardinals

22 February 2014 Last updated at 02:46 GMT

Pope Francis is due to formally install 19 new cardinals in a ceremony at the Vatican later.

They are the first to be chosen by Pope Francis, and reflect the diversity of the modern Catholic Church.

The majority of those nominated are from outside Europe and North America.

Cardinals are the most senior clergymen in the Roman Catholic Church below the Pope.

Alan Johnston reports.
