Pro-Russian protesters build barricades at Donetsk city hall

8 April 2014 Last updated at 15:25 BST

Pro-Russian protesters have occupied the city hall in Donetsk and built barricades to stop Ukrainian police regaining control of the building.

Tensions are high after Russia annexed the Crimea region of Ukraine and pressure was building in eastern Ukraine for more areas to cede to Russian control.

The BBC's Steve Rosenberg reports from the scene.
