Ukraine conflict: Donetsk and Luhansk vote in 'self-rule' referendum

11 May 2014 Last updated at 09:32 BST

Voting has begun in parts of eastern Ukraine in a referendum over self-rule, organised by pro-Russian separatists.

The poll, in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, has been condemned by the Ukrainian government and the West.

BBC correspondents at a number of polling stations have reported chaotic scenes - no voting booths and no electoral register.

Sarah Rainsford in Donetsk says she has not seen a single ballot in the clear ballot boxes marked 'no'.
