A newborn baby girl has been found abandoned in a bin for recycling bottles in the town of Rouvroy in northern France.

The girl was reportedly discovered by a passerby who mistook her cries for a trapped cat. She was found with her umbilical cord still attached.

The child is being treated for cuts to the skin and hypothermia at a hospital in the nearby town of Lens.

An investigation (link in French) has been launched to identify the mother.

Police say the child's life is not in danger.

The local mayor, Jean Haja, told La Voix du Nord newspaper that he needed to know more about the case before passing judgment.

"Is it fear or desperation that made the mother act in the way?" he asked. "I don't know. Is it a desperate act?"
