Westmeath: Baby boy killed in car crash

A baby boy has been killed in a car accident in County Westmeath in the Republic of Ireland at the weekend.

It happened on the Athlone bypass on Sunday afternoon.

A three-year-old girl who was also in the car was taken to hospital. Her injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

The five-month-old boy was in a baby seat in the back of the car that was driven by his parents.

The crash happened at about 14:00 local time when the car veered off the road onto the hard shoulder and struck a barrier.

The two adults in the car were uninjured in the crash.
