HSE investigation into death of baby at Cavan General Hospital
The Health Service Executive (HSE) says an investigation has begun following the death of a newborn baby at Cavan General Hospital.
The baby died on Tuesday.
Last year, after the deaths of three babies within an 18-month period, the Health Information and Quality Authority was instructed to examine the maternity services at the hospital.
RTÉ said that up until Tuesday, it is believed six incidents were being investigated by experts from outside the hospital.
The newborn baby died in the maternity unit of Cavan General Hospital on Tuesday.
The HSE said that Cavan & Monaghan Hospital management offered its deepest sympathy to the family on their tragic loss and hoped they would "be given the privacy that they need to deal with their grief".
"The hospital will give the family every assistance and support required," a HSE spokesperson said.
"As is normal practice a full review of the circumstances surrounding the death will be carried out."
