Three young men are still being treated in hospital after a single-car crash in County Donegal, in which two others were killed.

The five friends were driving home from a night out when the crash happened at around 03:35 BST on Saturday morning.

Their car went off the road between Quigley's Point and Whitecastle before crashing through trees and down into an embankment.

One of them was pronounced dead at the scene.

A second was taken to Altnagelvin Hospital in Londonderry where he was later pronounced dead.

The three other males are understood to be in a stable condition in hospital.

All of the young people involved in the crash were from nearby Buncrana.

Fianna Fáil Councillor Rena Donaghey said: "The community is in shock at the loss of two young lives. It is hard to believe that this has happened.

"They come from a very close knit community where everyone is devastated. These boys has everything to live for, one of them was due to start a new job in Scotland on Monday.

Mrs Donaghey added: "We extend our sympathies to the bereaved families and to the relatives of those injured and still in hospital."

Gardaí (Irish Police) have appealed for witnesses to the crash.
