Guernsey businesses rate States' performance as 'poor'

Nearly half of respondents to a business survey rated Guernsey States' performance as "poor" or "very poor".

It was one of the findings from the 2011 business trend survey, carried out by the Chamber of Commerce and the Young Business Group.

Just under 100 companies responded and 47% rated the States as "poor" or "very poor", 34% as "average", and 17% as "good" or "very good".

The firms ranked competitiveness as the most pressing issue for the States.

The outlook for the year in terms of turnover and profitability was more positive with the majority reporting the figures for 2010 were either the same or up on the previous year. Many predicted the trend would continue.

However, 62% of respondents also expected costs to increase in 2011, compared to 2010, with 54% expecting to increase their fees or charges at some point during the year.

Overall, the businesses reported an increased confidence in the island's economic prospects for the next 12 months and over the next two to three years.
