Guernsey civil partnership bid is backed

A petition calling for Guernsey to introduce civil partnerships has been signed by more than 700 islanders.

The campaign group, Out Of The Shadows, has been collecting signatures for six months and said it intended to present them to politicians later this month.

William Ceillam, a group member, said he was keen to urge deputies to look at the issue because it was not currently scheduled to be revisited until 2014.

He said: "It's time Guernsey brought itself into line with other places."

Calls for a civil partnership for same-sex couples began in the island after the lowering the age of homosexual consent to 16 in March 2010.

Mr Ceillam said: "Hopefully the support we've got will show there are calls within the island to bring it into Guernsey."
