Guernsey Police are holding four men in custody after an attempted armed robbery at the Co-op convenience store in St Martin on Sunday.

The Co-op said a man, holding a knife, demanded money from two members of staff at the En Route store just after 1920 BST, but left empty handed.

Armed officers searched for the man and detained four men.

Police are appealing for any witnesses who saw a man wearing a light coloured, baggy track suit to contact them.

They said they were not looking for anyone else in connection with the raid.

Colin Macleod, chief executive officer of the Co-op, said: "Our main priority is our store colleagues and making sure they are okay after an incident like this.

"Fortunately no-one was hurt but we take this type of incident very seriously. A counselling service will be made available for any colleague who wishes to use it. "
