The Vale Douzaine has expressed disappointment that the idea of holding Guernsey's 2012 general election on a Saturday was rejected.

Deputies decided on Thursday against moving the next election to a weekend. It will instead be held on Wednesday 18 April 2012.

Senior Constable Brian De Jersey said he had hoped moving it would make it easier to find volunteers.

He said: "Each election, it is a problem and it is down to the few."

When the 10 parish douzaines were consulted ahead of the proposals going to the States, the Vale was one of just three who supported the move to a Saturday.

Mr De Jersey said the Vale had its unique problems as "the biggest electoral district... [with] the biggest number of votes if everyone voted".

At the last election in 2008, nearly 3,400 voters turned out in the Vale. No other district had more than 3,000.

Mr De Jersey said: "You've got to man the three tables at Rue Maingy, at the Scouts headquarters and three tables at the Vale Douzaine Room.

"You need two people at each table and to get volunteers to do this, who are capable of doing it... it's very difficult to organise people on a Wednesday when it's a working day."

Mr De Jersey said the problem may be alleviated by the introduction of a compensation scheme for election volunteers.
