Guernsey dentist says maternity leave 'may not work'

A Guernsey dentist has expressed concern about maternity leave proposals that have been put to the public.

Dr Nav Khaira, based at St Martin's, said smaller businesses could suffer if mothers can take six months off work.

He said that while he was in favour maternity leave, he felt focus needed to be placed on the possible impact.

The States' Social Policy Group issued a consultation document in August 2011 asking for views on maternity and paternity leave and benefits.

A number of proposals were suggested, including a maximum of 26 weeks of maternity leave, and a similar benefit for parents choosing to adopt a child.

Dr Khaira said: "Because our workforce is very much weighed towards the female side, we could potentially have a lot of our workforce off on maternity leave at once.

"If that was the case, that would have great impact on the way and how we can treat patients."
