Alderney lifeboat rescues five people from cruiser

Five people were rescued by the Alderney lifeboat after they reported a fire on board their motor cruiser.

The RNLI said the skipper of the 35ft Varga Girl reported an engine room fire and the subsequent loss of engine power and hydraulics.

The cruiser was seven miles north of Alderney, heading from the island to her home port of Portland.

The lifeboat was launched at 12:45 BST and had towed the vessel back to Braye Harbour by 14:00.
