West Cornwall targeted by bogus doorstep callers

A number of homes in west Cornwall have been burgled by bogus doorstep callers, police have said.

People have been warned to be vigilant about men calling at homes claiming to be checking for water leaks.

Devon and Cornwall Police said householders in Perranporth and St Ives have been targeted.

No-one has been hurt, but in at least two incidents property was stolen from the homes.

Supt Julie Whitmarsh said: "If you get a call that you're not expecting ask for their ID and shut the door on them while you check it.

"Give the company a ring who they are reporting to be from and check that they are meant to be in the area."
