Alderney construction firms fear work going off-island

Three Alderney construction firms have said contracts being awarded to foreign firms are a threat to their future.

A consultation by States members Ray Berry and Matt Birmingham indicated the companies were particularly concerned when it came to States contracts.

Five of the nine company bosses who responded to the survey said they thought they would not be trading in five years' time.

The States will discuss the report at its meeting on 11 January.

When asked what the States of Alderney could do to help, keeping work on-island and speeding up the planning process were the most commonly chosen options.

Mr Berry and Mr Birmingham said more than 30 businesses were surveyed and 30% responded.
