Guernsey deputies pay changes are proposed

Two Guernsey politicians have proposed changes to plans for States members pay during the four-year term starting in May 2012.

The Policy Council's proposals include a £5,000 pay increase and the closure of the States members pension scheme.

Deputy Jan Kuttelwascher has suggested pay should not be annually reviewed and adjusted according to the island's median earnings.

While Deputy Rhoderick Matthews has called for pay to be increased further.

He has suggested Guernsey deputies get a basic salary of £36,000 and up to £2,400 of expenses, compared to £32,155 and £2,000 under the Policy Council's proposals.

Deputy Matthews has also suggested a change for Alderney States Representatives from £10,050 in salary and £1,000 in expenses to £1,200.

The two proposals, a third placed by Deputy Mary Lowe, and the Policy Council's original recommendations are due to be voted on by the States later this week.
