One mile minimum for Guernsey high school buses

Pupils living within one mile of Guernsey's high schools will no longer have guaranteed seats on school buses from Monday.

The Environment Department has imposed the limit to combat overcrowding.

Any student living within one mile of La Mare de Carteret, Les Beaucamps or St Sampson's high schools will only be able to board if the bus is not full.

Buses will also only stop to drop off pupils after school at a minimum distance of one mile from each school.

The department said it had introduced the system after spending two weeks talking to parents and examining data to decide the how the new plan should work.

A similar scheme was delayed in December to allow the department to carry out further consultation.

The department said the new limit would not apply to primary schools as it was less practical to expect a child of four or five to walk to school, compared with their secondary school counterparts.

It said the agreement with the bus operator to enable schoolchildren to make use of scheduled bus services at no charge during school times provided that they are in school uniform would continue.
