Guernsey Inheritance Law to change in April

Changes to Guernsey's Inheritance Law will come into force on 2 April, the States has agreed.

In June deputies voted to replace the current system of forced heirship with that of testamentary freedom.

Currently islanders are forced to leave a percentage of property and belongings to their spouse and children.

The law change will give islanders the freedom to dispose of their property as they wish in a will and also makes it easier to challenge wills.

Wills made before the law change will not be affected by its enactment.
