French yachtsman who went overboard 'presumed dead'

French Police are in Alderney after a French yachtsman went overboard near the island.

Authorities said the 41-year-old was now presumed dead after being missing for two days.

A major search of waters about seven miles north of Alderney was carried out on Friday after the man's wife alerted the French Coastguard.

The search, involving teams from France, Guernsey and Alderney, was called off at 19:00 BST on Friday.

The French authorities said it was now unlikely the missing sailor would be found alive.

His sailing boat, the Manua, is docked in Alderney.
