Guernsey States to cut apprentice grant by 10%

Guernsey businesses who take on apprentices will get paid less by the States from September, according to the Education Department.

The department is backing the recommendations of an independent review into the scheme.

It suggested a 10% cut would work without affecting the number of available placements.

Education says it commissioned the review because it wanted to ensure all operations were fit for purpose.

The findings of the report show the vocational scheme is an important asset and worth several millions of pounds to the island economy.

It also highlighted some negative aspects including problems with the retention rates of students.

There have been very few changes to the vocational scheme, which has run for more than 50 years, in the past decade.

It is thought the 10% reduction would save the Education Department about £50,000 per year.
