Island struggling to fix nursing shortage
A significant nursing shortage in Guernsey will continue unless incentives are brought in, a Royal College of Nursing director has warned.
There are currently about 100 vacancies - a figure which has not changed since February due to high turnover.
Patricia Marquis, RCN regional director, said nurses pay needed to rise and the island's housing laws needed to be more flexible.
Guernsey's health office said it was using international recruitment drives.
Ms Marquis also suggested the island should focus on training more local men and women to become nurses.
HR Business Partner for Guernsey's health department, Anita Gaudion, said there was a worldwide shortage of qualified nurses.
"That's been a trend for some time," she said.
"Looking at the workforce data it looks as if the forecast for that trend is looking to increase and reverse over the next two to three years and we're hoping that that will be one of the things that helps us in our overall campaign to recruit registered nurses to our workforce."
She said the department invited 115 candidates from off-island to interview for nursing positions in 2015, which cost Health around £80,000, and the "majority" offered positions took them up.
