Chinese studies for the Manx curriculum
Chinese studies could be on the curriculum for Manx secondary students, according to the island's minister for education and children.
Eddie Teare is hoping to have a Mandarin teacher from the Confucius Institute based on the island in 2011.
The news follows a government five-day visit to Beijing to strengthen ties between China and the Isle of Man.
Eddie Teare said: "China is the second biggest economy in the world and we need to engage with the culture."
He added: "It won't happen overnight, it's something we have to work on over a period of time, we have to understand the culture and we have to gain their trust.
Confucius Institutes are non-profit-making organisations which aim to promote Chinese language and the understanding of Chinese culture.
There are several centres in the United Kingdom including Sheffield, Manchester, Edinburgh and London.
It is hoped the Manx centre would be based at Ballakermeen High School in Douglas.
