Horse lifted from ditch by Manx fire crews

A horse that became stuck in a ditch in the Isle of Man has been freed by fire crews during a 90-minute rescue operation.

Firefighters from Ramsey and Douglas borrowed a nearby farmer's telehandler tractor to lift the horse out of the ditch on Jurby Road, Ramsey.

A vet sedated the animal and supervised the lift, which took place at about 0800 GMT on Saturday.

The fire service said the horse did not appear to have been injured.

A fire service spokesman said: "Fire crews working in difficult circumstances managed to secure strops around the horse and it was lifted to safety utilising a telehandler provided by a local farmer.

"The condition of the horse is not known but it did not appear to be hurt by the fall into the ditch or the subsequent rescue and was led away for a more thorough check.

"We would like to thank all those who offered their assistance which was gratefully received."
