Isle of Man warned of 'cowboy builders'

The Isle of Man Office of Fair Trading (OFT) has issued a warning to residents about "cowboy builders" operating on the island.

The organisation wants to avoid people falling victim to builders who call at house doors offering to do work.

It is thought people accept because of cheaper prices and availability.

An spokesman from the OFT said: "Past experience of such builders indicates that the quality of their work is of a poor standard."

The chairman of the OFT, Bill Henderson MHK, advised local residents to take time to make sure that the business name is properly registered and never to part with a significant amount of cash up front.

He added: "If a householder is concerned that they may have fallen foul of these problem builders they should contact the Office's Trading Standards staff."
