Football fans given advice for safe kick-off to season

Lancashire Police are advising fans heading for Deepdale, the home ground of Preston North End, how to keep their cars safe during matches this season.

Officers said while crime in Preston was low, thieves can take advantage of crowds to target people and property.

Fans are advised to park in a well-lit area, tuck in wing mirrors and hide any valuables. They were also told to avoid carrying more cash than necessary.

Sgt Wendy Fitzgerald said: "We want fans to enjoy football but stay safe."

"We would ask them to take care and make sure they keep their belongings secure."

Peterborough's first Championship fixture of the season, an away game at Blackpool, kicked off earlier.
