Allan Bell and Peter Karran in line for chief minister
Allan Bell and Peter Karran were put forward as candidates to succeed the Isle of Man's retiring Chief Minister, Tony Brown, in Tynwald on Tuesday.
Mr Bell is the island's longest serving member of the House of Keys, having been in office for 27 years.
Liberal Vannin party leader Peter Karran topped the Onchan poll with 2,704 votes.
As long as a clear majority is achieved, the new chief minister will be elected by Tynwald on 11 October.
Chief Minister Tony Brown stepped down from Tynwald at the General Election on the 29 September.
Mr Brown began his political career in 1976 as a commissioner for Castletown and has since served 30 years in office as a member of the House of Keys.
