Yearly rise in Isle of Man unemployed

New Year unemployment figures on the Isle of Man are higher than January 2012, according to official figures.

At the end of December there were more than 1,000 people out of work, compared with 979 in December 2011.

The treasury figures show unemployment rates during December 2012 to be higher among men (741) than women (279).

Most of those signing on to the island's unemployment register during the month came from the retail and catering sectors.

The catering and hotel industry accounted for the largest number of unemployed people, with 151 registered in December 2012.

The current rate of unemployment on the Isle of Man stands at 2.3%
