Isle of Man government council house plans stalled

Plans to introduce a means testing system for public sector housing have stalled, the Manx government said.

Social Care had announced that, from April 2015, council house rents on the island would be charged according to individual incomes.

The rules also meant that tenants with rising incomes would have their rents increased accordingly.

A spokesman said "extensive" research had shown the system was not yet feasible under current Manx law.

Social Care Minister Howard Quayle said: "It is important that any policy we introduce is robust enough to prevent fraud or loopholes and does not have unforeseen consequences for the vulnerable."

The government said a further decision would be announced in November.
