About 1,400 walkers have started the 104th Manx Telecom Parish Walk endurance event in the Isle of Man.

The hardiest entrants will be aiming to cover 85 miles (137km) within 24 hours to complete the event which visits all 17 of the island's parishes.

Last year Richard Gerrard completed the race in a record-breaking 14 hours, 40 minutes and eight seconds.

Only 175 of the 1,500 walkers who started the event completed the full distance inside the 24-hour time limit.

The race began from the National Sports Centre at 08:00 BST.

The majority of those taking part will not be trying to walk all 85 miles - Rushen after 19 miles or Peel after 32 miles are more common targets.

Race director Ray Cox said: "It is a festival atmosphere with people willing you on all the way."

Motorists are advised to check the event's website about road closures and no-stopping zones along the course.
