Bonnag World Championships: Manx bakers vie for title

Dozens of bakers are expected to contest the World Bonnag Championships in the Isle of Man later.

According to organisers the traditional sweet bread is thought to have been a Manx staple for hundreds of years.

Entries are invited in categories for men, women and children, and judging will take place from 19:30 GMT at the St James schoolrooms in Dalby.

A spokeswoman for the event said entries will be judged on taste, appearance and texture.

The judges have yet to be revealed, she joked, so "no bribes can take place!"

This year the competition, which has been held for more than 20 years. will feature a gluten-free category.


Technical Challenge: Bonnag

  • 300g Manx Soda Bread flour from the Laxey Mills
  • Two teaspoons of sugar
  • ½ teaspoon of salt
  • Two handfuls of sultanas
  • 55g of margarine or butter
  • Buttermilk
