Jersey bailiff admires Japanese courage
Jersey's bailiff has sent a message of support to the Japanese ambassador in London.
More than 7,300 people are known to have died in the earthquake and tsunami on 11 March.
Michael Birt said the world had noted with admiration the quiet dignity and courage shown by the Japanese people.
He said: "It has been heartrending to see on our television screens the might of the tsunami and the terrible destruction which it has wrought."
The earthquake and tsunami it triggered crippled a nuclear plant's cooling systems, raising concerns over radiation leaks.
Mr Birt said: "The world has noted with admiration the quiet dignity and courage shown by the Japanese people in the face of such suffering.
"I know I speak for the whole community when I express our sincere condolences and express the hope that the intense emergency efforts being undertaken by the Japanese government will assist in alleviating the suffering of those affected as soon as possible."
