St Helier taxi marshall scheme stopped in cash crisis

The Q-Safe Taxi Marshal scheme is set to close because of a funding shortage, the Safer St Helier Community Partnership has announced.

The marshalls supervise late night queues for taxis, at the Weighbridge, and help people to get home safely.

The Safer St Helier group said it had been "spectacularly successful", helping reduce crime by 64% over two years.

But, the scheme will stop on 11 April until sustainable funding is secured.

Colin Russell, chair of the Safer St Helier Community Partnership, said: "The loss of a major sponsor in 2010 came as a great financial blow to the Q-safe scheme that we have not recovered from.

"But the public can rest assured that we are working extremely hard to secure sustainable funding for the future, but in the meantime we have to suspend the service."
