Jersey Harbour impounds sailing trust boats

An organisation set up to encourage people to try sailing in Jersey has had its boats impounded by the Harbour department.

The Jersey Harbour department has seized all five boats owned by the Jersey Sailing Trust.

They were scheduled to be auctioned off on 16 April to pay for overdue fees.

The Assistant Minister with responsibility for harbours, Senator Paul Routier, said no payments had been made by the trust for more than a year.

Senator Routier said: "The action being taken now is a last resort and is proportionate and reasonable under the circumstances.

"Today I received an e-mail from a representative of the trust to say he had optimistic news for us that might be able to resolve the matter."

Jersey Sailing Trust did not want to comment, but last month a spokesman from the trust said it was very short of funds.

He said members had not responded to an appeal for money and warned it may have to sell its yachts.
