Jersey's school pupils are encouraged to walk

Jersey is planning its first Walk-to-School fortnight.

The event encourages children, parents, teachers and other staff to walk rather than drive to school and will take place from 16 to 27 May.

The island recently introduced a Sustainable Transport Policy which aims to reduce traffic at peak times by up to 15%.

Mike Jackson, minister of transport, said the level of school traffic was a "significant issue".

The fortnight will culminate in a Schools' Green Travel Day.

Mr Jackson said: "As we all know, school traffic is a significant issue and the policy aims to develop travel plans and safe routes to school schemes to make travel to and from school safer and more sustainable."
