The Lions Club of Jersey will announce later how much it is to donate to each of 40 local charities to benefit from the 40th annual Swimarathon.

The club, which organised the charity event in March, has so far allocated £58,400, which is 40% of all money raised.

People taking part in the swim raised a record £146,000.

President Lion Carl Howarth said it had received "amazing support" in 2011 and since the first event in 1972.

"In the past year we spent or committed more than £135,000 from the 2010 Swimarathon and I have no doubt that we will do the same this year," he added.

"Fittingly, most of what we raise is spent locally and almost £60,000 of what we raised this year will be disbursed to these 40 local charities, all of whom perform very valuable work within our community and with whom we are proud to be associated."
