Decision due on grant to Jersey fee-paying schools

Parents in Jersey will find out next week whether the States will cut its grants to fee paying schools.

Politicians will continue to debate the issue on Tuesday after agreeing to return to the States next week.

They are discussing the proposal to reduce the grant paid by the public towards fee-paying schools such as Beaulieu, De La Salle and Victoria College.

It is part of plans to reduce government spending.

Headteachers had warned that a cut in the grant would lead to fee increases.

Senator Ben Shenton argued that no cuts should be made until the Education Department had done a full consultation.

He said: "We cannot deny a generation good education because we went with the minister and made a mistake, so I think we need to think this through and examine the effects on the economy."
