The States of Jersey has rejected the latest attempt to exempt healthy foods from the goods and services tax.

Deputy Shona Pitman wanted the health department to make up a list of foods and take them out of the 5% taxation.

States members voted 20 in favour to 24 against the plan, but did agree to ask health to compile the list.

The Chief Minister, Senator Terry Le Sueur, said tax policy should not be defined by the health minister.

Members argued there was no guarantee it would work, with very few other jurisdictions who had done it successfully.
