Jersey's Dean abstains in Diocese vote on women bishops

Jersey's Dean abstained at a vote at the Diocese of Winchester over whether women should be become bishops.

Priests and lay members of the Jersey church have already voted against it.

The Very Reverend Bob Key said he had actually been tempted to vote in favour because he thought it was inevitable.

But he succeeded in putting forward a motion asking that anyone strongly opposed to such ordinations should be protected from any changes.

He said: "My concern is that this particular legislation, not the principle, but this particular legislation does not give enough safeguards for good Christian people who can't accept the ministry of a woman bishop.

"I think it's a Christian principle - virtue - that we should look after not simply those who agree with us, but also those who disagree."
