Jersey law change agreed for new 5p and 10p coins

States members have agreed to change the law to allow 5p and 10p coins in Jersey to be made out of nickel-plated steel in the future.

The law change means the new coins will be considered legal tender in Jersey.

Currently the coins are made from cupro-nickel, but the UK Treasury wants to make 5p and 10p coins of a different metal to save money.

They will be the same size and weight as the current coins, but will be magnetic and 10% thicker.

The Treasury Minister said the change had come as a result of the rising cost of metal.

The new coins will save up to £18 for every 1,000 5p pieces, and £35 per 1,000 10p coins.
