Two dogs die from gastro-enteritis in Channel Islands

Channel Islands dog owners are being advised to make sure their pet's vaccinations are up to date after two dogs died from vomiting and diarrhoea.

Jersey's New Era veterinary hospital said it had been getting a number of calls from worried pet owners.

There were two cases of a severe gastro-enteritis in Jersey and three in Guernsey with the dogs needing intensive care.

But the vets said there was no cause for alarm.

'Best approach'

They warned any events or meetings involving large numbers of dogs should be cancelled or postponed for the next week.

It means the annual JSPCA great dog walk this weekend has had to be postponed.

And the Kennel Club of Jersey has cancelled the forthcoming Members Show on 12 November, as it was a meeting of more than 100 dogs.

Ro Cox, from the club, said: "This action has been taken on the advice of our honorary vet and with knowledge taken from the other vets on the island.

"Although the message from them is that there is no cause for alarm, it was felt that to err on the side of caution was the best approach."
